Following Bayern Munich's final triumph, Goal looks back at a memorable campaign, picking out the 11 players who made the difference and kept us firmly on the edge of our seats

Bayern's triumph in the all-German final caps a remarkable continental campaign, where we saw favourites Barcelona and Real Madrid crash out in the semi-finals and no Premier League sides make it past the first knockout round. Our team, selected in a 4-2-3-1 formation, has a few key parameters. Players must have played on the side of the pitch they are listed in positionally for their clubs over the course of the tournament, while the 11 players were selected from the list of top performers for each position on our player ratings index. Only players who reached the quarter-finals or further were considered.

Barcelona beware: Neymar is a player set up for a monumental fall

As the 2012-13 season draws to a close, Barca, despite their fourth La Liga title in five years, are a subdued organisation. The clinical, methodical dismantling at the hands of Bayern, coupled with their own insipid capitulation, once again raised the question of Messidependecia. Without him this immortal team appear fallible. Without their god-like genius, they are ponderous. Susceptible. Beatable. Paris Saint-Germain almost seized upon it. Bayern relentlessly exploited it. Messi IS Barca, some believe. Pedro, Villa, Tello, Alexis - they aren't offering enough, say others. Now, the cockatoo in the room becomes apparent; Neymar can provide that which is lacking when Messi is unable to deliver. Barcelona's agent in South America, Andre Cury, is a fully paid-up member of the Neymar appreciation society. "Neymar coming to Barcelona will put an end to two types of over-dependence: dependence on Neymar at Santos and over-dependence on Messi at Barcelona as we would then have another player at his level."

Real Sociedad 3-3 Real Madrid: Basques salvage precious point against los Blancos

Real Sociedad left it late to earn a valuable point with a 3-3 draw against a largely second-string Real Madrid side at Anoeta. Gonzalo Higuain put los Blancos ahead inside six minutes and despite a valiant fight from the hosts which saw them control the game for large parts, Jose Callejon added a second after the break. Xabi Prieto and Antoine Griezmann brought the Basques level and though it looked as if Sami Khedira had won it for the visitors late on, Prieto popped up with a priceless stoppage-time equaliser. Jose Mourinho made six changes to the team which suffered defeat in the Copa del Rey final last weekend and it only took six minutes for one of those replacements to open the scoring. Mikel Gonzalez hesitated in possession in front of his own goal and a clumsy pass saw him gift the ball straight to Higuain. The Argentine thanked him by racing through on goal to slot a cool finish past Claudio Bravo and into the bottom corner. Montanier's men were not fazed by going behind and were only denied an equaliser by an irrepressible Diego Lopez. The former Sevilla keeper readjusted excellently to keep Griezmann's header out after 20 minutes and soon after he turned Imanol Agirretxe's nodded effort over the bar. Shortly before the break, Alberto de la Bella latched onto Asier Illarramendi's chipped pass and rolled the ball across the box, but Griezmann stretched to get a touch and inadvertently took it away from Agirretxe who was awaiting a simple finish at the back post. The second half continued in a similarly exciting manner, with Kaka failing to bend his shot on target from the top of the box before Lopez parried a thunderous cross-goal effort from Agirretxe. But it was los Merengues who struck next as Kaka bided his time on the left wing before finally threading in a magnificent cross upon spotting the run of Callejon who, one-on-one with the keeper, steered the ball into the corner of the net with his first touch. Montanier's side were offered a route back into the game as Khedira handled the ball inside the area with 63 minutes played. Prieto was given the responsibility of the penalty and he showed nerves of steel to roll it into the bottom corner. Six minutes later the game should have been level as Griezmann latched onto Agirretxe's scything through-ball. The Frenchman rounded the keeper but was unable to wrap his foot around the ball and send it into the empty net. Agirretxe was unfortunate not to find the net from Diego Ifran's free kick, but with 12 minutes remaining the Basques found their equaliser. A quick move down the right ended with Carlos Martinez sending a low ball to the back post where Griezmann finally got his goal with a simple tap in. The game was only level for two minutes, though, as Germany internationals Khedira and Mesut Ozil combined with the former dinking a delightful finish over Bravo to regain his side's lead. But the same defiant spirit that Sociedad had displayed earlier in the game shone through in stoppage time as Prieto bundled in an equaliser at the far post despite Lopez's best efforts to deny him. A draw still means that the San Sebastian outfit will need results elsewhere to go there way if they are to secure a return to the Champions League, while Madrid fall 15 points behind champions Barcelona following their derby win over Espanyol.

Alexis & Pedro decide derby in Blaugrana's favour

Barcelona moved one step closer to equalling La Liga's record for points in a season with a 2-0 victory over Espanyol at Estadi Cornella-El Prat on Sunday. Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in sublime fashion after a quarter of an hour for the visitors, who were largely in control for the majority of the game, before Wakaso Mubarak's red card with 10 minutes to go essentially ended any hopes of an Espanyol comeback. And in the 86th minute, substitutes Xavi and Pedro combined excellently for the latter to poke home the clinching goal, Barca's 52nd away from home this season - marking a new record in the Spanish top flight. And another landmark looms, as the Blaugrana's triumph in the Derbi Barceloni moves them to within three points of Real Madrid's 100-point tally from last season - which will be met should they beat Malaga in their league finale next Saturday. Sanchez was joined in the forward line by Cesc Fabregas and David Villa; three players whose sub-par campaigns have seen them face uncertain Barca futures - particularly with the arrival of Neymar from Santos. But Sanchez could hardly have done more to convince Tito Vilanova of his worth to the team next season than his fantastic moment of individual brilliance to get the ball rolling after 14 minutes. The Chilean seemed to be running into a dead end after playing a one-two with Villa, but with supreme agility, he evaded two quick-fire challenges from Diego Colotto and Raul Rodriguez, before bending an exquisite finish into the far side. It was a fairly comfortable opening to the game for Barca, though as expected, Lionel Messi’s absence denied their attack a certain element of panache, as Espanyol were able to hold their ranks at the back. The stadium was then united in a minute of applause after 22 minutes, to commemorate former player Dani Jarque, who passed away in 2009 with a heart attack at the age of 22. Espanyol, however, could count themselves lucky not to have conceded a second goal just after half an hour, when Alex Song clipped a beautiful pass over the top of the defence to former Arsenal team-mate Fabregas, whose effort struck the post. Andres Iniesta also came close to notching his team’s second goal with a powerful strike that whistled the wrong side of the post moments before the interval. Though the hosts played with more poise after the restart, it was Villanova’s men who nearly struck first in the second half. A brisk move on the edge of the 18-yard area found Villa in space 12 yards out, but the striker could not find the target. But the second half had a distinct ‘end-of-season’ feel, as Barca seemed in no hurry to extend their lead, while Espanyol could not find an extra gear in the attacking third. However, the game was thrown right back into the fire in the 80th minute when Wakaso picked up a yellow card, protested furiously, and was promptly given a second booking to put an end to his night. The home fans, already testy after a few perceive refereeing injustices, were brought to their feet in fury by the Ghanaian’s dismissal, but were silenced for good with four minutes remaining as Barca struck again. Xavi played the ball high into the path of Pedro inside the area, and the forward took the pass in his stride to flick a wonderful finish into the back of the net, and kill off the game for good.

Biancocelesti edge dour derby to claim Coppa Italia

Lazio claimed their sixth Coppa Italia by defeating city rivals Roma 1-0 in a dour final at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening. Senad Lulic grabbed the only goal of a horribly underwhelming game, slotting home with just 19 minutes remaining to spark wild celebrations in one half of the capital. Both sides had played their part in a predictably frenetic opening to the game that resulted in early bookings for both Cristian Ledesma and Federico Balzaretti. Lazio could have been ahead inside the opening four minutes but Miroslav Klose fired into the side netting after Bogdan Lobont had been unable to hold onto a low strike from the dynamic Lulic. However, Roma really should have taken the lead soon after when Erik Lamela and Marquinhos combined to put Michael Bradley in on goal, only to see the American's subsequent strike trickle wide. For the majority of the half, the Giallorossi looked the side most likely to make the breakthrough but, for the most part, they were restricted to long-range efforts from Francesco Totti and Lamela. In the end, they were lucky to go in level at the break, with Klose surprisingly heading straight at Lobont, after being picked out at the back post by Stefan Radu's deep cross from the left-hand side. Moments later, the Germany international became the fifth player to enter the book, which merely underlined the fractious nature of a first half that ended just second after Mattia Destro had got his first sight of goal, the striker just failing to climb high enough to get a clean connection on a brilliant cross from Marquinhos. The latter played his part in a bright spell for Roma just after the break but they just could not get in behind a Lazio defence that, in theory, should have been more vulnerable following the injury-enforced withdrawal of Ledesma on 54 minutes. Still, the Giallorossi continued to press and Totti tested Federico Marchetti with a decent low strike before the Lazio goalkeeper was called upon again to get down low to stop a snap-shot from Destro. A goal was coming - but it arrived at the other end, with Lulic tapping home at the back post after Lobont had deflected Antonio Candreva's cross into his path. Roma tried to rally and very nearly levelled in fortuitous fashion just seconds after the restart when Marchetti lost the flight of a Totti free in the air and ended up desperately pushing the ball up onto the crossbar before luckily gatherin the rebound. Thereafter, though, it was Lazio who looked the more likely to score, with Lobont denying Stefano Mauri in an injury-time one-on-one. In the end, though, Lulic's goal proved sufficient to earn the Biancocelesti their first meaningful piece of silverware since lifting the same trophy four years ago.
